Featured S60 5th Edition Mobile Phone: Sony Ericsson Satio

The Sony Ericsson Satio is a plastic cased smartphone, announced by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on 15 February 2009 as the Idou (pronounced "I do"). It was released on 7 October 2009 in the UK in 3 colour schemes: Black, Silver and Bordeaux (Red).

The focus of the phone is the high quality playback of music and video, as well as photography. The camera is located on the back of the phone, behind a slider and features a xenon flash. On the side of the phone, there is a shutter button, and a button which allows you to switch between still and video modes. Next to this is a rocker switch for zooming in and out. Also on this side is a button for playback of photos or video. The other side of the phone has a sliding lock button and a covered slot for a MicroSD card.

The front of the phone is dominated by a 3.5-inch, 16:9 ratio 360x640 TFT resistive touchscreen. There is also a front facing camera for video calling. At the bottom of the touchscreen are three small buttons: green (left), white (centre), and red (right).

In terms of software, Satio uses the Symbian operating system, which is created collaboratively under the stewardship of the Symbian Foundation. It will use the PlayNow service, Sony Ericsson's mobile content platform, and is part of the company's new Entertainment Unlimited service. In terms of connectivity, it is Wi-Fi-enabled and has a GPS chip for navigation and location-based services. It also supports full Flash for video playback.

The phone was withdrawn from sale in November 2009 by two major British retailers due to complaints from customers. However, the problem was found only in UK editions of the phone and was probably caused by carrier-specific customizations. The following software update released by Sony Ericsson provided a fix and the phone was back for sale at those two retailers.

What is S60 3rd Edition?

Before S60 5th Edition came to our market, S6o 3rd Edition was the latest platform of Symbian operating system. After S6o 3rd Edition, Nokia launched the S60 5th Edition which is currently the latest platform on our market as well as it is the last Series of S6o. New versions of Symbian are coming and probably devices will be released this coming July 2010. There's no S60 4th Edition.

(S60v3) uses a hardened version of Symbian OS (v9.1), which has mandatory code signing. In S60v3, a user may install only programs that have a certificate from a registered developer, unless the user disables that feature or modify the phone's firmware through third-party hacks that circumvent the mandatory signing restrictions. This makes software written for S60 1st Edition or 2nd Edition not binary-compatible with S60v3. In 2006, a "Designed for S60 Devices" logo program for developers was launched. The logotype can be used with conforming programs (Symbian or Java).

How to Preserve the Installers of downloaded apps from OVI Store: (Trick 101) Nokia S60 5th Edition

When you download and install any application from Nokia OVI store you cannot copy the installer. Upon completion of installation, your phone automatically deletes the installer of downloaded apps which is temporarily located at E:Installed files folder. The installer has additional file extension of .dm which is the marked extension for deletion.

This trick helps you preserve and copy the installer for later use or for the purpose of sharing to others. Here is the step by step process.

1. Open your OVI client application then connect to the internet either through Wi-Fi or 3G connection
2. Choose any application you wish to install
3. Download the application
4. Watch the progress of the download. When the download is near to reach 100% or better when you see it's 95% in progress go to "E:Installed files" better known as your memory card drive at "Installed files" folder. You can see there the installer of the downloaded file
5. Press "Option" then select "Organize"
6. Select "copy to folder" to copy the file to your desired directory. In my case I copied the installer to "C:Games" or better known as Phone Memory at "Games" directory.
7. The installer has still file extention of .dm just remove the .dm

Now you have the installer with you. Upon copying the file, do it quick while your phone is still installing the file or else the installer will be deleted immediately after installation.
